A conversation between Kristine Arth and Qin Li about the relationship between brand design and product development.

Kristine Arth Bio:
Kristine Arth is the director of brand at fuseproject, an industrial design and branding firm founded by designer Yves Béhar. During her time at fuseproject, she has built a dedicated brand practice where she leads a team of multidisciplinary designers on global brands such as PayPal, Jawbone, SodaStream and Nivea, as well as startups and non-profits like August, Edyn, SPRING accelerator, Whole World Water and 500 Capp Street. Kristine’s hands-on approach ensures a holistic design experience across every branded element, and she believes that hard work and laughter can solve nearly anything.

She started her career in Chicago at Wunderman, Upshot and Leo Burnett. Her experience in advertising & marketing touched on a wide range of deliverables for brands including Miller Coors, Coca-Cola, Burger King, P&G, Applebee’s and Microsoft. Kristine has also taught graphic design at Columbia College Chicago and has been a prominent speaker in their design programs. Kristine’s work has earned awards from Red Dot, IDA International Design, iF Design, IDSA, SPARK!, IDEA and The Dieline. This past year, she took part in the One Show design jury and, most recently, she lead the rebrand and launch of Rivella, a national Swiss soda.

Kristine holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Columbia College Chicago and studied traditional printmaking, letterpress and bookbinding at Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy.

Qin Li Bio:
Qin Li is the Director of Industrial Design at fuseproject in San Francisco. Founded in 1999, fuseproject is an award-winning design agency based in San Francisco. Taking a long-term approach to developing and enhancing brands, fuseproject works internationally across a wide array of industries including tech and biotechnology, furniture, fashion, environmental design, and consumer goods.

Originally from China, Qin has been with fuseproject since 2004 and was appointed Director of Industrial Design in 2012. She has received numerous awards for her work, including an IDSA Design of the Decade Award.

Over the past nine years at fuseproject, Qin has worked on a variety of design projects. She has led the development for such projects as the Herman Miller PUBLIC Office Landscape + SAYL Chair, all generations of UP, Jambox, and headsets for Jawbone, Edge for Movado, as well as projects with Kodak, Fluidigm, Coca Cola, and more. Qin is responsible for the entire design process—from ideation, to strategic thinking, to production—that includes a holistic design experience with branding, packaging, and UI design.
