Join us in the fun of “Let’s Get Pizza Instead,” the first coloring book publication from creative writing, tutoring, and publishing nonprofit 826 Valencia. These wacky illustrations were originally drawn on the fly by our volunteer illustrators in our Storytelling and Bookmaking Field Trip program.
On this field trip to our pirate ship on Valencia Street, students are charged with the task of writing an original story as a group, with the help of 826 volunteers and our elusive head editor Captain Blue. Students collaboratively create the beginning and middle of their story, brainstorm a setting and develop characters in small groups while an avid artist is illustrating the story. In the second half of the field trip, each student writes their own ending to the story which are finally sent upstairs to Captain Blue for approval. It’s a good time for all!
We’re excited to share a piece of this program with you at SFDW. Guests at this interactive lecture will get a taste of the program used in 826 centers across the country in our flagship space at 826 Valencia. Invent characters using the same profiles we use with our students and see them come to life in front of your eyes. We’ll have drinks and nibbles to start your Friday evening off right and each ticket comes with a copy of “Let’s Get Pizza Instead.” Plus, as always, all proceeds support the free student programming at 826 Valencia.
